Larry Page and Sergey Brin and their search for business

Page and Brin were data science students at Stanford University when they came together to develop an idea that budded inside them. They were keen on building a platform that would extract meaning from the accumulated mass data on the Internet.

The duo began working from Page’s dormitory room and developed a new type of search engine which they called BackRub. This was a blueprint for using the ‘backing links’ abilities to facilitate the rankings of different web pages for generating higher possibilities of searches.

In the mid-1998, the duo received their first outside financing from Andy Bechtolsheim, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems. They put up their first shop in Menlo Park, California with the name Google. Google is a spelling mistake of Page’s original name Googol, which is a mathematical term for the number one followed by 100 zeroes.

Eventually, the duo ventured out and by mid-1999, Google received $25 million in capital funding and since then, there was no going back.
