1. The reading campaign ‘Padhe Bharat’ launched by Dharmendra Pradhan-

Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education Minister, launched a program called ‘Padhe Bharat’, a 100-day reading campaign.
The campaign is in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that emphasizes the promotion of joyful reading culture for children to enjoy.
The program ensures that children have age-appropriate books to read in various languages like the local language, mother tongue, regional language, and tribal language.
‘Padhe Bharat’ campaign is set with the aim that children need to develop the continuous and lifelong learning skill of reading from an early age.
Reading helps children in their brain development and enhances their imagination.

2. In the fight against plastic pollution, Maharashtra joins the World Economic Forum-

Maharashtra joined the World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) to formulate a state-level plan to eradicate plastic pollution.
The partnership will bring together Maharashtra’s leading policymakers and business leaders among others.
By announcing the partnership during the WEF Annual Meeting 2022, Maharashtra is now one of the members in the growing list of global economies that will leverage the GPAP platform to bring localized solutions for the circular economy.

3. India will now go bilateral after Pakistan shot the SAARC in 2016-

India is now left with no other option but to engage in bilateral engagement with Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Nepal in economic limbo, and Afghanistan under Islamist Taliban control.
India has few options left but bilateral engagement with its neighbors to protect its national security.

4. India receives an FDI inflow of $83.57 bn in FY22, the highest ever-

India has recorded the highest ever FDI inflow of $83.57 billion in the Fiscal Year 2022, according to the announcement made by the central government.
India seems to be growing rapidly as a preferred country for foreign investments in the manufacturing sector.

5. World’s Highest Weather Station installed on Mount Everest by NatGeo-

At an altitude of 8,830 meters, the National Geographic Society has installed the world’s highest weather station on Mount Everest.
The new weather station on Mt. Everest will automatically measure the various meteorological phenomena.
The station is installed a few meters below the summit point last weak as the snow and ice on the summit are not suitable for fixing the equipment, said Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).

6. 23rd May: International Day to End Obstetric Fistula-

Since 2013, 23rd May is observed as the United Nations (UN) International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, a condition that affects many girls and women during childbirth in developing countries.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and its partners launched a global campaign to end Fistula in 2003, a collaborative initiative to prevent fistula and help restore the health of those affected.

1. ‘Sambhav’ portal launched by UP for disposal of public grievances related to energy-

Systematic Administration Mechanism for Bringing Happiness and Value, SAMBHAV portal is launched by Arvind Sharma, the Minister for energy and urban development.
The public portal is launched with the aim of providing a platform for public grievances and monitoring programs and schemes of two departments in Uttar Pradesh.

2. Uttarakhand becomes the 1st Indian state to roll out drones in the healthcare sector-

The Redcliffe Labs, a unit of the Redcliffe Lifetech in the U.S., has provided the first commercial drone flights in the country.
Uttarakhand becomes the 1st state to have drones in the healthcare sector and the route is from Uttarkashi and Dehradun.

3. Investment Incentive Agreement Signed between India and USA in Tokyo-

On 23rd May 2022, India and the United Nations of America signed an Investment Incentive Agreement in Tokyo.
Vinay Kwatra, India’s Foreign Secretary, and Scott Nathan, Chief Executive Officer of US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) have signed the agreement.
The new agreement supersedes another similar pact signed between the governments in 1997.

4. The US Indo-Pacific economic plan joined by India-

To launch the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), India joins other nations in this initiative of the US to counter China’s aggressive expansion in the region.
Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam are the members who jointly account for 40% of the Global GDP.

5. Haryana wins the Hockey India Sub-Junior Championship after beating Jharkhand-

The Haryana Women’s Hockey team won the India Sub-Junior Championship after defeating the Jharkhand’s Women’s team in Imphal on 22nd May 2022.

1. The ABHA Smartphone App upgraded by the National Health Authority-

The National Health Authority has introduced a revised Ayushman Bharat Health Account in the ABHA mobile application which is a part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
Earlier known as the NDHM Health Records App, the ABHA app has a new user interface and functions that enable users to view their health records from anywhere at any time.

2. Swacch Survekshan 2023 launched by MoH&UA-

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoH&UA) launched the 8th edition of Swacch Survekshan 2023 on 24th May 2022.
The launch is under the Swacch Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, an annual cleanliness survey, and this time the theme is “Waste to Wealth”.

3. The third edition of the bilateral exercise Bongosagar commences-

The bilateral exercise Bongosagar of the Indian Navy and Bangladesh navy begins its third edition at Port Mangla on 24th May 2022.
The exercise has first scheduled the Harbor Phase that is to take place from 24th-25th May which is to be followed by the Sea Phase in the Northern Bay of Bengal from 26th-27th May.
The participating Indian Naval Ships are Kora and Sumedha.

4. The Indian Air Force ranks third on the World Air Power Index-

The Indian Air Force (IAF) ranks third on the World Air Power Index in terms of its caliber of fighting strength of different countries’ air force services.
According to the world directory of modern military aircraft (WDMMA) 2022 report, the IAF is placed third in the Global Air Power Rankings.

5. 25th May observed as International Missing Children’s Day-

To raise awareness, every year 25th of May is observed as International Missing Children’s Day.
The aim behind the day is to highlight the issues of child abduction, educate parents on safety measures to protect their children and honor those who have never been found, and celebrate those who have been found.
The event is run jointly with the Global Missing Children’s Network.

1. The first metro city that gets its biodiversity registered is Kolkata-

Kolkata becomes the first metro city in the country to prepare a detailed biodiversity register.
KMC, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation prepared the People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) that has a detail about the flora and fauna varieties in the city along with its land use and human activities.
The biodiversity management committee (BMC) under the supervision of the state biodiversity board and with the help of NGOs has prepared the document.
Other cities that have prepared the document are Chandigarh and Indore.

2. India’s biggest drone festival is to be inaugurated by PM Modi today-

The Bharat Drone Mahotsav 2022 is to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today.
The Drone Festival of India will be a platform for discussions on accelerating drones and their component manufacturing in India.
The event will be hosted in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
It is to be a two-day event that will welcome participants from around 1600 delegates including foreign diplomats, armed forces, government officials, PSUs, drone startups, and other private companies.

3. The biggest K-Pop boy band BTS is invited to the White House by Joe Biden-

To stop the Asian hate, USA President Joe Biden has invited BTS, the biggest K-Pop boy band, to the White House.
The widely popular group consisting of seven members- RM, Suga, Jin, J-Hope, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook, are to visit the White House on the 31st of May as special guests.
The White House announced that the band and their ARMY, their fans, are going to be the propagator to stop Asian hate and “to discuss Asian inclusion and representation and to address anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination”.

4. A 2km wide asteroid to fly past Earth on 27th May 2022-

An asteroid, twice the size of the world’s largest skyscraper Burj Khalifa, is to make a close approach to Earth on 27th May 2022.
The asteroid is deemed to be potentially hazardous.
NASA has issued a warning and has named the Asteroid 7335 (1989 JA).
The asteroid is hurtling fast towards Earth and will make its closest approach to the NASA plant at 7:56 PM (IST) on 27th May 2022.

5. “Tomb of Sand”, the Indian Novel, wins the International Booker Prize-

Geetanjali Shree, the Indian writer, and Daisy Rockwell, the American translator won the International Booker Prize for the novel “Tomb of Sand”.
The book was originally written in Hindi and it is the first Indian language book to win such a high-profile award.
The 50,000 pounds won by the duo will be split between them.

28th May 2022 News Highlights

1. Re-establishment of Inter-State council under PM Modi’s Leadership-

With PM Modi as the Chairman and all the state’s Chief Minister and the six Union ministers as members, the Inter-State Council is made.
The permanent invitees to the Inter-State Council will be the ten union ministers.
The Inter-State Council’s standing committee is also reestablished with Union Home Minister Amit Shah as the Chairman.

2. To establish a framework for climate action, India and UAE signed an MOU-

India and UAE have signed an MoU the objective of which is to build a framework to enhance and facilitate bilateral cooperation on climate action.
The MoU will also contribute towards implementing the Paris Agreement.
Bhupendar Yadav, the Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change with Sultan Al Jaber of UAE signed the MoU.

3. The first Global Report on Assistive Technology released by UNICEF-WHO-

The Global Report on Assistive Technology (GReAT) is released by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The report includes 10 important actionable suggestions for enhancing access to assistive technology for all children along with evidence-based best practice samples.

4. Anwar Hussain Shaik is the new chairman of the WTO committee-

Indian Government Officer, Anwar Hussain Shaik is made the chair of the World Trade Organization’s Committee on Technical Barriers on Trade.
The role of responsibilities will be handed over from Elisa Maria Olmeda da Alejandro from Mexico.

5. India won 33 medals at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022-

The Junior World Cup of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) 2022 was held at Suhl in Germany.
Manu Bhaker and Sourabh Chaudhary, the ace shooters, led the Indian contingent.
The Indian junior shooting team came in the first position overall.
In total India won 33 medals that include 13 gold, 15 silver, and 5 bronze.
Italy came in second place with four gold medals.

6. Nawazuddin Siddiqui honored the Excellence in Cinema Award at the French Riviera Film Festival-

Bollywood star Nawazuddin Siddiqui is recognized for his contribution to cinema with an international award.
Vincent de Paul, the Emmy award-winning American star bestowed the honor to Siddiqui at the French Riviera Film Festival.
