Today’s National Current Affairs:
1. To counter China’s BRI, MEA launches growth model-
- The Ministry of External Affairs has launched a platform titled the Trilateral Development Corporation (TDC) Fund.
- The aim behind the launch is to provide an alternative to the Chinese development partnership model that placed parts of the developing world into a debt trap.
- The Fund will involve private sectors with state support for investments from big-ticket firms in the Indo-Pacific region along with other parts of the world.
- The Global Innovation Partnership (GIP) launched in India in a collaboration with UK at the PM Narendra Modi-Boris Johnson summit is set to provide a template to use the TDC Fund for trilateral projects with other countries.
- Some of the other countries who are keen to partner with India in the innovation and development sectors are Japan, Germany, France, and the EU.
2. Coimbatore gets TN’s first IoT-based water supply system-
- Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) launched a smart 24×7 water supply project at Cheran Nagar in Kavundampalayam.
- According to CCMC sources, this is the first-of-its-kind IoT-based water supply project and is funded by the Government of India’s Department of Science & Technology – Water Technology Initiative (DST-WTI).
3. Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 completes four years-
- Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, UBA 2.0 has completed four years.
- On this day in 2018, the UBA 2.0 was launched with the vision of transformational change in rural development processes.
- Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is a flagship program of the Education Ministry that aims to link the Higher Education Institutions with a set of at least five villages so that these institutions can contribute to the economic and social betterment of these village’s communities using their knowledge base.
- Its objective is also to engage the faculty and students of Higher Educational Institutions in understanding rural realities.
- Currently 748 Institutions are participating under the scheme. In phase -2 of the scheme, 605 institutions have been selected.
- Out of these 313 are Technical Institutions and 292 are Non-Technical Institutions.
4. 540 MW Kwar Hydro Electric project on Chenab river in J&K gets nod from cabinet-
- Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the construction of 540 Megawatt Kwar Hydro Electric project located on river Chenab in Kishtwar district of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
- The project will be implemented by Chenab Valley Power Projects Private Limited, a joint venture company between NHPC and JKSPDC.
- The project has been approved with an investment of over 4,526 crore rupees.
- The Kwar Hydro Electric Project will be commissioned within 54 months and the Power generated from the Project will help in balancing of Grid and will improve the power supply position.
- Union Cabinet has also approved the continuation of Prime Minister Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi, PM SVANidhi, beyond March this year till December 2024.
- Mr. Anurag Thakur informed that eligible vendors and their families can benefit from 8 social security schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, PM Suraksha Bima Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.

5. Judicial appointments for Calcutta, Himachal HCs-
- President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the appointment of five judges to the Calcutta High Court and one judge to the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
- Those appointed to the Calcutta High Court as additional judges are Kesang Doma Bhutia, Rabindranath Samanta, Sougato Majumdar, Bivas Pattanayak, and Ananda Kumar Mukherjee.
- In Himachal Pradesh HC, Satyen Vaidya has been appointed as a judge.
7. Jamtara becomes the country’s first district with a library in every village-
- Jamtara in Jharkhand has become the only district in the country where all gram panchayats have community libraries.
- This district with a population of about eight lakh has a total of 118-gram panchayats under six blocks and each panchayat has a well-equipped library which is open for students from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
8. Structural Biologist M. Vijayan, the Padma Shri holder, passes away-
- The eminent structuralist biologist M. Vijayan, DAE Homi Bhabha Professor at the Indian Institute of Science, passes away in Bangalore.
- M. Vijayan was a prominent contributor to the development of macromolecular crystallography in India.
International Current Affairs:
1. Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari takes oath as Pakistan’s Foreign Minister-
- Scion of Pakistan’s leading political dynasty, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, took oath as the foreign minister in the government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at a crucial juncture as he faces multiple challenges such as fixing strained ties with the US and finding a way to restart the peace process with neighboring India.
Business & Economy Current Affairs:
1. NASSCOM appoints TCS’s Krishnan Ramanujam as chairperson-
- The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), has announced the appointment of Krishnan Ramanujam, who is President, Enterprise Growth Group, at Tata Consultancy Services, as the industry body’s chairperson for 2022-23.
- Krishnan takes on the position from his previous role as vice-chairperson, succeeding Rekha M. Menon, chairperson and senior managing director of Accenture in India who served as chairperson of NASSCOM for the year 2021-22.
- NASSCOM also announced the appointment of Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India, as its vice-chairperson for 2022-23.
2. ONGC inks MoU with Norway’s Equinor-
- Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited, ONGC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Equinor, the Norwegian state-owned multinational energy company.
- The MoU was inked in New Delhi for collaboration and partnership in upstream exploration and production areas, midstream, downstream, and clean energy options.
- Equinor is the leading operator on the Norwegian continental shelf, present in around 30 countries worldwide.
- The MoU was signed during the visit of a high-level delegation of Norway to India.
Science & Technology Current Affairs:
1. SpaceX Crew-4 mission launches successfully; astronauts settle in for a ride to ISS-
- SpaceX’s Crew-4 astronaut mission for NASA has launched successfully launched atop the Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
- The SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, named Freedom by the crew, successfully separated from the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket and is now flying on its own.
- The Crew-4 flight carries mission commander Kjell Lindgren, Pilot Bob Hines, and mission specialist Jessica Watkins (who is the geologist that Schmitt spoke of), all of whom are NASA astronauts.
- The flight also carries mission special Samantha Cristoforetti of the European Space Agency (ESA).
- With this mission, Watkins will become the first African American woman to join a long-duration mission aboard ISS. Only seven other Black astronauts have boarded the space station since its inception over twenty years ago.
- The mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program and the fifth SpaceX flight to carry NASA astronauts, including the Demo-2 test flight to the space station in 2020.

1. Indian GM Gukesh wins Menorca Open chess tourney-
- Teenaged Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh won the Menorca Open chess tournament.
- Gukesh defeated fellow Indian B Adhiban in the seventh and final round to cap an impressive performance during which he remained undefeated.

1. World Day for Safety and Health at Work 28 April-
- In 2003, the International Labour Organization (ILO), began to observe World Day to stress the prevention of accidents and diseases at work, capitalizing on the ILO’s traditional strengths of tripartism and social dialogue.
- 28 April is also the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers organized worldwide by the trade union movement since 1996.
2. For the year 2022, 28th April is observed as the day for International Girls in ICT-
- The fourth Thursday in April is observed as the day to commemorate International Girls in ICT.
- This year the day is sealed on the 28th of April.
- International Girls in ICT Day is observed as a global movement to increase the representation of women and girls in technology.
