National Current Affairs:

1. Vagsheer, sixth submarine under Scorpene project, to be launched on Apr 20-

  • The Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) will launch ‘Vagsheer’, the sixth submarine under the P75 Scorpene project, on April 20.
  • Sea trials for ‘Vagir’, the fifth submarine of Project 75, started in February 2022.
  • Vagsheer is the last submarine of the P75 Scorpene project.
  • The INS Kalvari, INS Khanderi, INS Karanj, and INS Vela have already been commissioned while sea trials of the Vagir are underway.

2. Ministry of Coal organizes Yogotsav countdown program in Delhi-

  • With just 67 days to go for International Day of Yoga, 2022, the Ministry of Coal organized the Yogotsav countdown program in New Delhi.
  • The program was inaugurated by Coal Secretary, Dr. Anil Kumar Jain.
  • The countdown celebration was attended by senior officials and staff of the Ministry.
  • More than 100 persons participated in the Yoga program under the guidance of experts from Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga. Y-Break protocol effective for office was also demonstrated.

3. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana visits Attari border, first CJI to do so-

  • Chief Justice of India NV Ramana visited the Attari border near Amritsar.
  • He is the first CJI to visit the place.

4. Chamba to be the first Himachal Pradesh district to produce hydrogen fuel-

  • Himachal Pradesh’s (HP) aspirational district Chamba will be the first district of the hill state to produce hydrogen fuel and run transportation after the Chamba district administration and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the execution of Pilot Hydrogen Project.

5. India gets elected to four UN ECOSOC bodies-

  • India has been elected to four key bodies of the UN Economic and Social Council, including the Commission on Science and Technology for Development.
  • The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six principal organs of the UN System established by the UN Charter in 1945.
  • It consists of 54 members of the United Nations elected by the General Assembly.
  • “India gets elected to 4 @UN ECOSOC Bodies: Commission for Social Development, Committee on NGOs, Commission on Science & Technology for Development, and Ambassador Preeti Saran gets re-elected to Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights,”.

Today’s International Current Affairs:

1. Viktor Orbán wins fourth consecutive term as Hungary’s prime minister-

  • Hungary’s nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban has won a fourth term by a landslide in the country’s general election.
  • His right-wing Fidesz party had 53% of votes with almost 99% counted.
  • The opposition alliance led by Peter Marki-Zay was far behind with 35%.

2. Israel Successfully tests ‘Iron Beam’ new laser-based air defense system-

  • A new laser missile-defense system “Iron Beam” was successfully tested by Israel.
  • The missile can destroy any airborne object including drones.
  • Iron Beam is the world’s first energy-based weapons system that uses a laser beam to shoot down incoming UAVs, rockets, mortars, long-range missiles, anti-tank missiles, etc.
  • The Iron Beam is developed by the Rafael Advanced Defence Systems.
  • The missile is using a directed-energy weapon system and can go a long way in providing aerial defense.

Science & Technology Current Affairs:

1. Asian waterbird census: Feathered creature population drops by 1.5 lakh in Kashmir-

  • Bird population in Kashmir has decreased by 1.5 lakh since 2020, according to the latest `Asian waterbird census.
  • The census holds significance as it helps to understand which species are most important, which might require special management and protection.
  • In this census, around 75 species of water birds were recorded, 56 species each from Kashmir and Jammu with 37 species observed in both regions. These include 3 Ramsar sites, 11 wetland conservation reserves, and 7 wetlands of ecological importance.

Sports Current Affairs:

1. Young Indian Grandmaster R Pragganandhaa wins prestigious Reykjavik Open chess tournament-

  • Young Indian Grandmaster, R Pragganandhaa won the prestigious Reykjavik Open chess tournament in Reykjavik, Iceland with 7.5 points from nine rounds.
  • He had recently hogged the limelight after stunning world No.1 Magnus Carlsen in an online tournament.

2. India to host Street Child Cricket World Cup in 2023-

  • India will host the Street Child Cricket World Cup in 2023.
  • Organised by Street Child United and Save the Children India, the Street Child Cricket World Cup 2023 will welcome 22 teams from 16 countries to India next year.
  • In 2019, this championship was held in London where eight teams competed, and Team India South lifted the cup after beating hosts England.

3. Odisha CM unveils logo of 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup-

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the logo of the 2023 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup at the Kalinga stadium in the capital Bhubaneswar.
  • To be held in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, the prestigious quadrennial tournament is scheduled from January 13 to 29.
  • Hockey India and its official partner Odisha will host the marquee event for the second consecutive time in the country after 2018.
  • The 15th edition of the showpiece will be staged in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, where the country’s largest hockey stadium is being constructed.

Miscellaneous Current Affairs:

1. Tamil Nadu: CM Stalin Declares Ambedkar’s Birth Anniversary As ‘Equality Day’-

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced in the Assembly that the birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar on April 14 would be celebrated as ‘Equality Day’ from this year onwards.

2. World Art Day-

  • A proposal was put forward at the 17th General Assembly of the International Association of Art in Guadalajara to declare April 15 as World Art Day, with the first celebration held in 2012.
  • This proposal was sponsored by Bedri Baykam of Turkey and co-signed by Rosa Maria Burillo Velasco of Mexico, Anne Pourny of France, Liu Dawei of China, Christos Symeonides of Cyprus, Anders Liden of Sweden, Kan Irie of Japan, Pavel Kral of Slovakia, Dev Chooramun of Mauritius, and Hilde Rognskog of Norway. It was accepted unanimously by the General Assembly.

3. Celebration of World Voice Day 2022 on 16th April-

  • The World Voice Day is celebrated globally every year on the 16th of April.
  • The day is a celebration to commemorate the importance of voice in the daily lives of all the people. 
  • The Day is a global annual event dedicated to recognizing the boundless limits of the human voice. 
  • For this year, the theme of the World Voice Day is to ‘Lift Your Voice’.
