National Current Affairs of today:

1. Delhi to Have India’s Largest Sewage Treatment Plant-

  • Delhi will have India’s biggest Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) that will be able to pump out 564 million liters of treated water daily.
  • With the work advancing at a fast pace, the new plant being constructed in Okhla along with two other STPs will help the national capital to prevent 1,362 MLD of dirty water from choking the Yamuna, which is currently among the most severely polluted rivers in the world.

2. Dr. Jitendra Singh announces Single Window Portal for pensioners and elder citizens-

  • Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Science and Technology Minister, announced the setting up of the Single Window Portal for the benefit of pensioners and superannuated elder citizens.
  • He said, the portal will not only enable constant contact with pensioners but will also regularly receive inputs, suggestions, and grievances for a prompt response.
  • The Minister’s objective of the Common Pension Portal is to create a single window of digital mechanism for pensioners to raise their grievances and get them resolved without having to approach different authorities in person.
  • Dr. Jitendra Singh informed that since the launch of Doorstep Service for submission of Digital Life Certificate, more than three lakh eight thousand Life Certificates have been done through the India Post Payments Bank.

3. Rajnath Singh arrives in Washington to attend India-US 2+2 dialogue-

  • Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister, arrived in Washington DC to attend the 4th India-US 2+2 ministerial dialogue on April 11.
  • During his five-day US visit, Rajnath Singh will hold talks with the US leadership to deepen the India-US strategic partnership.
  • Rajnath Singh will separately meet the US Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, in the Pentagon.
  • The two will discuss defense cooperation, including defense industrial collaboration and capability building through military-to-military engagements.

4. NITI Aayog CEO releases State Energy and Climate Index, SECI- Round one in New Delhi-

  • Gujarat, Kerala, and Punjab have emerged as the top three performing states in the NITI Aayog’s State Energy and Climate Index (SECI).
  • NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr. Rajiv Kumar and Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant released the State Energy and Climate Index, SECI- Round One in New Delhi.
  • Gujarat, Kerala, and Punjab have emerged as the top three states in the NITI Aayog’s first State Energy & Climate Index (SECI) while Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh are the bottom three performers among larger states.
  • The top three performers among the smaller states are Goa, Tripura, and Manipur.
  • NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr. Rajiv Kumar stressed the need to convert efforts towards achieving the Panchamrit targets announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP-26, Glasgow.
  • NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said that achieving the ambitious climate targets would require a conducive policy environment to encourage investment.
  • He also remarked that the State Energy and Climate Index-Round One will help to initiate a dialogue with the states on the energy sector so that much-required policy improvements can be made.
  • The report aims to rank States and Union Territories on six parameters.
  • These are Discoms’ Performance, Access, Affordability and Reliability of Energy, Clean Energy Initiatives, Energy Efficiency, Environmental Sustainability, and new initiatives.

International Current Affairs:

1. President Ram Nath Kovind arrives in Turkmenistan on a 3-day official visit-

  • President Ram Nath Kovind was accorded a ceremonial guard of honor as he began his three-day state visit to Turkmenistan during which he will meet his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov and discuss ways to boost bilateral ties with the resource-rich Central Asian country.
  • This is the first-ever visit of the President of India to independent Turkmenistan and comes just after the inauguration of new Turkmen President Berdimuhamedov.

2. Foundation laid for India LOC funded Hi-tech park in Bangladesh-

  • The foundational stone for the first IT/ Hi-Tech Park is laid at Keraniganj near Dhaka.
  • This is the first of 12 such parks to be built under the Line of Credit (LOC) extended by the Govt of India to Bangladesh.
  • These 12 IT/Hi-Tech parts will greatly help promote the IT Industry of Bangladesh and build capacity in new and emerging technologies, said a tweet issued by the High Commission of India after the inauguration of the Hi-Tech Park.
  • The project will also involve the construction of energy-efficient green buildings with designs inspired by the national flower of Bangladesh, the Lily.

Today’s Business & Economy Current Affairs:

1. Mahindra Lifespace Developers launches India’s first Net Zero Energy residential project in Bengaluru-

  • Mahindra Lifespace Developers has established a new benchmark in the field of sustainable development with the launch of India’s first Net Zero Energy residential project, Mahindra Eden, in Bengaluru which is certified by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
  • The unique design features of this residential development are together expected to save over 18 lakh kWh electricity annually, equivalent to powering over 800 homes.
  • The remaining energy demand for the project will be met from renewable sources through both on-site solar and wind energy systems, and the purchase of green energy from the grid.

Science & Technology Current Affairs:

1. The forecast on planet Neptune is chilly and getting colder-

  • Frigid and far-flung Neptune, our solar system’s outermost planet, is adding to its reputation as an enigmatic world, with astronomers puzzled by a surprising drop in its atmospheric temperatures during the past two decades.
  • Focusing upon Neptune’s stratosphere – the atmosphere’s relatively stable region above the turbulent weather layer – the researchers had expected to find rising temperatures in the part of the planet visible from Earth with the onset of its southern hemisphere summer, a season lasting for four decades. Instead, now they found temperatures declining significantly.

Sports Current Affairs:

1. Chennai to host the first-ever Chess Olympiad in India-

  • India will host the Chess Olympiad for the first time, from July 28 to August 10, 2022, in Chennai.
  • The 44th edition of the biggest chess event in the world will have a virtual participant list with most of the stars joining from across the globe.

2. World Doubles Squash Championships: India wins maiden Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles in Glasgow-

  • In the World Doubles Squash Championships, India’s Dipika Pallikal teaming up with Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa has won mixed doubles and women’s doubles titles at Glasgow.
  • Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal, seeded second, defeated the fourth-seeded English pair Adrian Waller and Alison Waters in the finals to claim the mixed doubles title, becoming the first-ever World Doubles squash champions.

Today’s Miscellaneous Current Affairs:

1. Ramdarash Mishra selected for the Saraswati Samman, 2021-

  • Noted poet and litterateur Prof. Ramdarash Mishra, will be awarded the prestigious Saraswati Samman, 2021, for his collection of poems ‘Mein to Yahan Hun’, announced the KK Birla Foundation.
  • Instituted in 1991, Saraswati Samman is one of the most prestigious literary awards in the country.
  • The award is given every year to an outstanding literary work written in any Indian language by an Indian citizen and published within the last 10 years.
  • It carries a citation, a plaque, and a cash prize of Rs. 15 lakhs.
  • The recipient is chosen by a selection committee, whose current head is Dr. Subhash C Kashyap, former secretary-general of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
  • Born in Dumri village in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district on August 15, 1924, Mishra has excelled in different branches of Hindi literature.
  • In a career spanning decades, the 98-year-old has to his credit 32 collections of poems, 15 novels, 30 short-story collections, 15 books of literary criticism, four collections of essays, travelogues, and several memoirs.
