1. Wheat Procurement Season Extended till 31st May by the Center-

  • On Sunday, May 15th, 2022, the Union Government has asked the wheat-producing states and Union Territories to continue procurement till 31st May.
  • The move was made by the Modi sarkar to ensure that no wheat farmer faces any inconvenience and the government is committed to ensuring farm prosperity.

2. ‘e-Adhigam’ scheme launched by the Haryana government to distribute computer tablets to students-

  • Nearly 3 lakh students will be receiving computer tablets under the recently launched ‘e-Adhigam’ scheme by the Haryana government.
  • The scheme is launched by the Haryana state government to help students have a convenient online education experience.
  • Manohar Lal Khattar, the Chief Minister of Haryana, inaugurated the Advance Digital Haryana Initiative of Government with Adaptive Modules (Adhigam) scheme at Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak, Haryana.
  • The scheme also states that the Class 10 Board qualifiers who are promoted to the next class will get the computer tablets.

3. UN Human Rights Council has approved the Czech Republic to replace Russia-

  • The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously agreed on the Czech Republic to replace Russia on the human rights council following Russia’s violation and suspension due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
  • The Czech Republic is the eligible successor to replace Russia for the replacement for the country needs to come from an East European country for the seats on the Geneva-Based council are divided among regional groups.

4. Overseas loan book growth to receive a strong pick up in FY22 sees Banks-

  • According to the latest data, large banks are seen to increase their exposure in the overseas market in the year ended 31st March.
  • The report also shows that other banks participated in overseas deals lending to foreign companies.

5. First set of three proving flights conducted by Jet Airways-

  • Jet Airways conducted its first set of three proving flights on Sunday with 18 people including DGCA officials of aviation regulator.
  • Boeing 737 aircraft with registration number VT-SXE of Jet Airways conducted the set of proving flights.

6. India Lifts the Thomas Cup Title-

  • The men’s badminton team of India wins the Thomas Cup for the first time after beating Indonesia.
  • India defeated the 14 times winner Indonesia in the final with a stunning 3-0 score and lifted the Thomas Cup in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • The notable performers from the team were Lakshya Sen, Kidambri Srikanth, Chirag Shetty, and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.

Important news of 17th May 2022-

1. SCO-RATS meet, to focus on the situation in Afghanistan, hosted by India- 

  • The chairmanship of the Council of Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of SCO(RATS SCO) was assumed by India on October 28 for a period of one year.
  • On Monday a meeting was held in New Delhi comprising the counter-terrorism experts from India, Pakistan, and other member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to discuss how to boost cooperation in combating various regional security challenges.
  • One of the major topics of discussion in the meeting was to be on the situation in Afghanistan, on how to deal with the threat from the terrorist groups active in the Taliban-ruled country.

2. New Chief Office of REC Ltd.: Vivek Kumar Dewangen-

  • A Manipur cadre batch of 1993 IAS officer, Vivek Kumar Dewangen has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of REC Ltd., Ministry of Power.
  • Nidhi Chibber has been appointed as the chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

3. President of UAE: Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan-

  • Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, is appointed as the President of UAE by the Supreme Council of Union.
  • The Council meeting was held in the Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi.
  • Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai led the Council meeting.

4. Anna Qabale Duba, a Kenyan Nurse, crowned as the World’s Best Nurse- 

  • Stationed at the Marsabit County Referral Hospital, Anna Qabale Duba, a Kenyan Nurse, won the inaugural Aster Guardian Global Nursing Award.
  • Anna was bestowed with such a prestige for endorsing education and practicing against outdated cultural norms like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) that are a part of her community.

5. Rs. 59 lakh penalty imposed on KEB Hana Bank by the RBI-

  • The Korean Bank, KEB Hana Bank, has been imposed a penalty of Rs. 59 lakh by the RBI for non-compliance with certain norms related to interest rates on deposits.
  • On the basis of the “Reserve Bank of India (Interest Rates on Deposits) Direction, 2016”, the Korean bank has been penalized for non-compliance.

6. To capture the effects of space weather events on Earth’s atmosphere, ISRO plans a Twin Aeronomy Mission-

  • The mission launched by ISRO is aimed to capture the latitudinal and longitudinal effects of space weather events on Earth’s upper atmosphere.
  • The National meeting on Aeronomy research was organized by ISRO on May 10, 2022, to discuss the importance and prospect of space-based in-situ observation of the Earth’s upper atmosphere to study the space-weather effects.

7. 16th May observed as International Day of Light-

  • To mark the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by Theodore Maiman, physicist and engineer, 16th May is observed as the International Day of Light.
  • The day is observed to strengthen scientific cooperation and harness the potential for sustainable development and foster peace.

1. Amit Shah inaugurates the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory at CFSL in Hyderabad-

  • The National Cyber Forensic Laboratory (NCFL) was inaugurated by the Home Minister Amit Shah on the premises of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Hyderabad.
  • The aim behind the launch of the NCFL is to expediate the resolution of cybercrime cases in the country.
  • The approval for the establishment of the NCFL for evidentiary purposes in the CFSL, Hyderabad, was made by the Ministry of Home Affairs in December 2021.

2. Elisabeth Borne, France’s first female Prime Minister in 30 years-

  • The French President Emmanuel Macron on May 16, 2022, chose Elisabeth Borne as the new Prime Minister for the upcoming legislative elections in June this year.
  • It is the second time in 30 years that a woman is appointed for such a top post.
  • Jean Castex, the former Prime Minister of France handed over his resignation earlier that day, making way for a cabinet overhaul after Macron’s re-election in April 2022.

  • Wheat export is prohibited by the Indian Government with immediate effect reasoning food security owing to the conflict in Ukraine and the heightened heatwave in the country that reduced supply and raised the local prices sky-high.
  • India is not one of the world’s top wheat suppliers yet its prohibition on wheat export might rise the global wheat price, and impoverished customers in Asia and Africa might face a strain.
  • The decision of prohibiting wheat export is not to last indefinitely and might be changed, said the authorities during a press briefing.

4. New Executive Directors, Sitikantha Pattanaik and Rajiv Ranjan, named by the RBI-

  • The new executive directors have been named by the RBI.
  • Sitikantha Pattanaik will oversee the DEPR and Rajiv Ranjan will be in charge of the MPD.
  • Before being appointed to the new post, Rajiv Ranjan was the Adviser-in-Charge of the Monetary Policy Department and Secretary to the Monetary Policy Committee.
  • Pattanaik, on the other hand, was earlier an adviser at the Department of Economic and Policy Research.

5. South Korea defeated China and won the Uber Cup 2022-

  • South Korea lifted the Uber Cup for a second time after defeating China at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Korea fought hard and defeated the defending champion China.

6. 18th May commemorated as International Museum Day-

  • The International Museum Day (IMD) is celebrated every year on the 18th of May.
  • The is marked to celebrate the importance of museums in the different cultures.
  • Museums are a vital source of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures, and development of mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace among peoples.
  • The International Council of Museums (ICOM) decides the theme of the day every year and this year the theme is “The Power of Museum”.

1. Uttarakhand CM suspends RTO for not coming to office on time-

  • Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, suspended a Regional Transport Officer on Wednesday for reaching the office late.
  • Dinesh Chandra Pathoi, the RTO, was dealt with such a fate due to a surprise inspection of the Regional Transport Office at Rajpur Road.
  • Along with Pathoi, CM Dhami has taken strict action against others also who were absent from the office at 10:30 am.

2. After Germany, India becomes the 4th largest vehicle market- 

  • India surpasses Germany to become the 4th largest vehicle market according to the report released by the Organization Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA).
  • According to the report China is in the first place followed by US and Japan.
  • In 2021, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, India sold 37,59,398 vehicles as compared to Germany which sold 29,73,319 vehicles.
  • The figures show a 26% growth and India is the only country amongst the top 5 countries to register double-digit growth.

3. India is now the top beneficiary from overseas remittances-

  • India has surpassed Mexico as the top remittance-receiving country in 2021, pushing China to third place, according to the World Bank.
  • India has received more than $89 billion in remittances in 2021, an increase of 8% above the $82.73 Billion received in 2020.

4. India’s first 5G testbed, estimated to be worth Rs. 220 crore unveiled by PM Modi-

  • To allow startups and industry players to test and certify their technologies domestically, PM Modi has unveiled India’s first 5G testbed.
  • The testbed is valued at around Rs. 220 crore.
  • PM Modi said that the testbed is a significant step towards self-reliance in the direction of critical and modern technologies in his speech at the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s silver jubilee celebration.

  • Citing personal reasons as the cause, Delhi Lieutenant General Anil Baijlal submitted his resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • After the sudden resignation of Najeeb Jung, Anil Baijlal was appointed the LG in December 2016.
  • During the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, Anil Baijlal had earlier served as DDA vice-chairperson and Union Home Secretary.

2. Jammu & Kashmir people want early elections to install the government of their choice: Abdullah-

  • Omar Abdullah, the former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, said on Thursday that the people of J&K are “fed up” with the current government administration and want early elections to form the government of their choice.
  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) will take the decision about the polls said Abdullah after being asked whether the election will be held soon due to the fact that the delimitation commission report has been submitted.

3. Discovery of a ‘Lost World’ found in a massive sinkhole in southern China- 

  • In a gaping 192-meter-deep sinkhole, a lost world is found in southern China that could be housing unknown species.
  • The location of this newfound discovery made by spelunkers is in Leye County within the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
  • This new-found world has a forest of its own with species that are yet to be discovered.

4. The BHARAT TAP project gets unveiled at Plumbex India Exhibition-

  • Sh. Hardeep Singh Puri, the Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, started the Plumbex India Exhibition ceremony.
  • He also made the announcement of the Bharat Tap Project, a campaign to produce low-flow fixtures and sanitaryware to help India begin a new era of water conservation and sustainable development.

5. World Bee Day Celebrated on 20th May globally-

  • 20th May is observed as World Bee Day globally.
  • The day is marked to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators in the ecosystem.

  • After hearing the grievances of the people of the state, Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched the ‘Lok Milni’ scheme, the first-of-its-kind public interactive programme.
  • The aim behind the launch of the scheme is to provide a single-window platform to the people of the state to amend the complaints that they have.
  • The people of Punjab who had submitted various grievances and complaints in the last two months were called to attend the programme.

2. The 7th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of NDB was chaired by Nirmala Sitharaman-

  • Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs and India’s Governor for the New Development Bank (NDB) chaired the 7th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of NDB.

4. New Chief Executive of Hong Kong Appointed as John Lee-

  • Hong Kong, the special administrative region of China, has appointed John Lee as the new Chief Executive after the dubious Chief Executive Election 2022 held in the country.
  • China had overhauled Hong Kong’s electoral system in 2021 and had specified that only patriots, those loyal to the Communist Party of China, can run in the elections.
  • John Lee was the sole candidate who stood in the election and has now become the sixth-term Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

5. Pieter Elbers appointed as IndiGo’s CEO-

  • Pieter Elbers is appointed as the CEO of IndiGo by the Board of Directors of InterGlobe Aviation Limited.
  • Elbers will join IndiGo on or before 1st October 2022.
  • Ronojoy Dutta was in the position before Elbers and has decided to retire on 30th September 2022.

6. India’s Nikhat Zareen wins gold at Women’s World Boxing Championships-

  • Beating the Thai Olympian Jutamas Jitpong, Nikhat Zareen became the fifth Indian woman to win the World Title at the Women’s World Championships.
  • The dazzling 25-year-old boxer is a former junior youth world champion.

7. 21st May celebrated as International Tea Day-

  • Every year 21st May is observed as the International Tea Day.
  • The aim behind celebrating the day is to create awareness about a safe working environment for tea workers, fair trade, and a sustainable environment for tea production.
