1. The reading campaign ‘Padhe Bharat’ launched by Dharmendra Pradhan-

  • Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education Minister, launched a program called ‘Padhe Bharat’, a 100-day reading campaign.
  • The campaign is in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that emphasizes the promotion of joyful reading culture for children to enjoy.
  • The program ensures that children have age-appropriate books to read in various languages like the local language, mother tongue, regional language, and tribal language.
  • ‘Padhe Bharat’ campaign is set with the aim that children need to develop the continuous and lifelong learning skill of reading from an early age.
  • Reading helps children in their brain development and enhances their imagination.

2. From May 23rd to 24th, PM Modi is to visit Japan for the Quad Summit 2022-

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for a two-day visit to Japan to attend the Quad Summit 2022 on Sunday 22nd May.
  • The Quad Summit is set to be attended by the Quad leaders to further the cooperation among the member nations of the influential group and to discuss developments in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Modi had stated that the Summit will be an opportunity for the representatives of the four-member countries to review the progress of the Quad initiatives.

3. In the fight against plastic pollution, Maharashtra joins the World Economic Forum-

  • Maharashtra joined the World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) to formulate a state-level plan to eradicate plastic pollution.
  • The partnership will bring together Maharashtra’s leading policymakers and business leaders among others.
  • By announcing the partnership during the WEF Annual Meeting 2022, Maharashtra is now one of the members in the growing list of global economies that will leverage the GPAP platform to bring localized solutions for the circular economy.

1. India will now go bilateral after Pakistan shot the SAARC in 2016-

  • India is now left with no other option but to engage in bilateral engagement with Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Nepal in economic limbo, and Afghanistan under Islamist Taliban control.

  • At an altitude of 8,830 meters, the National Geographic Society has installed the world’s highest weather station on Mount Everest.
  • The new weather station on Mt. Everest will automatically measure the various meteorological phenomena.
  • The station is installed a few meters below the summit point last weak as the snow and ice on the summit are not suitable for fixing the equipment, said Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).

2. 23rd May: International Day to End Obstetric Fistula-

  • Since 2013, 23rd May is observed as the United Nations (UN) International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, a condition that affects many girls and women during childbirth in developing countries.
  • The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and its partners launched a global campaign to end Fistula in 2003, a collaborative initiative to prevent fistula and help restore the health of those affected.
