Today’s National Current Affairs:

1. Suman Bery takes over as Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog-

  • Experienced policy economist and research administrator Suman Bery took charge as the Vice-Chairman of  NITI Aayog.
  • He took over from Dr. Rajiv Kumar as the head of the premier think tank of the Government of India.
  • Mr. Bery has previously served as Director General (Chief Executive) of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and the global Chief Economist of Royal Dutch Shell.
  • He was also a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, Statistical Commission, and the Reserve Bank of India’s Technical Advisory Committee on Monetary Policy.
  • After taking charge, Mr. Bery said that he is honored to have been entrusted with the NITI Aayog’s charge at a time of great global uncertainty.
  • He said the challenge is to develop a vision of the way ahead based on in-depth analysis and wide debate and to work with India’s states, which is where economic development ultimately happens.
  • He added that India’s economic and social choices are of significance to the entire world.

2. India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement comes into force-

  • The historic India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, CEPA came into force.
  • The agreement was signed between the two nations in February of this year. Secretary, Department of Commerce, B V R Subrahmanyam flagged off the first consignment of goods comprising jewelry products from India to UAE under the CEPA at a function in New Delhi.
  • The consignment will now attract zero customs duty under this Agreement and is expected to reach Dubai.
  • Gems and jewelry sector contributes a substantial portion of India’s exports to the UAE.
  • India will benefit from preferential market access provided by the UAE on over 97 percent of its tariff lines which account for 99 percent of Indian exports to the UAE in value terms.
  • CEPA is expected to increase the total value of bilateral trade in goods to over 100 billion US dollars and trade in services to over 15 billion US dollars during the next five years.

3. Law Minister informs Judicial Infrastructure Development Authority will be formed at the state level to strengthen Judicial infrastructure-

  • Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has informed Judicial Infrastructure Development Authority will be formed at the state level to strengthen the Judicial infrastructure of the country.
  • The resolution regarding this was passed during the Joint Conference of Chief Ministers of the States and Chief Justices of High Courts in New Delhi.
  • But some of the Chief Ministers could not agree on this and insisted on constituting a committee at the state level because the implementation as well execution of works lies with the state government.
  • The Minister said the Chief Ministers and Chief Justices have later agreed that the body will be created at the state level with the involvement of the CMs and Chief Justices or their nominees.
  • Mr. Rijiju said, when the Chief Ministers and Chief Justices come together, many things can be settled.
  • Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has said lack of infrastructure is one of the main causes of delays in delivering Justice. Chief Justice said effective steps will be taken to ensure the clearing of cases pending for more than five years.

4. Amid the rising heatwaves, the Odisha government has revised the school timings-

  • Due to the rising heatwaves across various parts of the country, the Odisha government has revised the school timings of the state. 
  • According to the new timetable, classes are to begin at 6 am and end at 9 am.
  • The new school timings will come into effect from today, i.e., the 2nd of May 2022.

International Daily Current Affairs:

1. Ecuador declares state of emergency in three provinces over drug violence-

  • Ecuador President Guillermo Lasso announced a state of emergency for two months in three provinces with the highest registered levels of violence due to drug trafficking.
  • According to media reports, under the state of emergency, he had ordered the mobilization of 4,000 police and 5,000 military personnel to the provinces.

1. SES partners with Nasdaq to add ESG Performance Metrics for top 100 Indian firms-

  • Stakeholders Empowerment Services (SES) has announced the inclusion of ESG Performance Metrics for the top 100 Indian companies on the Nasdaq Data Link Platform, a global cloud-based technology platform that empowers all segments of the investing public with a comprehensive suite of core financial, fund and alternative data.
  • “These ESG Performance Metrics, which are available for the past four financial years and updated annually, provide more than 170 data points on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) parameters for each of the top 100 listed companies in India based on market capitalization,”.

2. ISMC announces plan to set up India’s first semiconductor fabrication unit-

  • ISMC announced its plan to set up India’s first semiconductor fabrication unit. The international semiconductor consortium will invest $3 billion in India’s southern Karnataka state to set up a chip-making plant.
  • It comes after union minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the Modi government expects to grant approvals to electronic chip makers in the next six to eight months.

Science & Technology Daily Current Affairs:

1. IMD to launch ‘Urban Meteorological Services’ in 50 cities-

  • The India Meteorological Department is all set to launch highly localized weather information services in 50 cities across the country on the lines of a similar initiative being implemented in the national capital region.
  • Metro cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bengaluru are expected to see the launch of Urban Meteorological Services in the first phase which will be later expanded to more cities.

2. UNESCO funds launch of Seychelles, the first-ever balloon satellite-

  • In a significant initiative towards boosting scientific temper and enthusiasm for space technology in the young citizens of Seychelles, an Indian organization facilitated the launch of Seychelles’ first-ever balloon satellite.
  • Completely funded by UNESCO, this project dubbed ‘Mission Payanke’ began with a four-member team from ‘Spacekidz India’ training the school students from the African nation in satellite fabrication, related fields, and helping them execute the launch and recovery of the balloon satellite weighing 2.5 kg.

1. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur inaugurates 2nd Khelo Masters Games-

  • Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurated the 2nd Khelo Masters Games Delhi-2022 at Tyagraj Stadium in New Delhi.
